Task 4 - Script

Through introducing our first shot as the wires, we take the audience on a journey to the world of ‘DVNO’. We drew inspiration for this from the DVD ‘District 13’ which also features the concept of wires in it’s opening sequence.

As soon as we enter ‘DVNO’ we establish the club-like diegesis through the 5 strips of LED lights which we programmed through the iphone application, Luminair. These provide the only source of light, creating a mysterious atmosphere surrounding the duo, intriguing their audience. As well as this, we wanted to emphasise the mystery of this world. We decided to convey this through the use of Final Cut Pro, a programme we used to edit our footage captured on the shoot day. By reversing some of the clips, we hoped to intrigue the audience, adding another layer, differentiating our video from others.

One of the ways we emphasised the professional appearance of DVNO was through using the sound system for our actors to sing along to the music instead of lip-synching. This technique helps to accentuate the realism of the video.

In order to promote the duos image we emphasised their individuality through the use of make up. For the two male members, we used silver make up purchased off ebay drawing inspiration from youtube as well as google research on similar bands such as ‘Empire of the Sun’ and ‘Pnau’.

Another way in which our music video differs from others is the emphasis that is placed on the audio as well as the visual material presented. Through basing our editing on the soundtrack of ‘DVNO’, we were able to produce fast as well as slow editing techniques. This meant we were able to combine the visual component of our music video with the tempo of the song at the time, causing our audience to associate the video with the music it’s promoting.

Most of the music that is heard in the video is the original soundtrack. However, the original song is around 5 minutes long so we had to cut off 2 minutes of music without the lyrics. We did this by using the software ‘Wavebase’

As well as filming footage on the shoot day, we also had photography students along with our own group member taking still digital photography in order to document the shoot as well as assisting our development of our CD covers and posters. Through the use of Adobe Photoshop, we were able to produce a 4-page CD cover as well as a marketing poster. In order for these to be effective, we had to infer the same values present in the video into the CD covers and poster. Because the video is framed by a black backdrop throughout, we decided to incorporate this into our ancillary products. Through keeping it seemingly simplistic we drew the attention to ‘DVNO’ itself, selling the duo as well as the single on the talent and appeal that the music itself brings to its audience.

After shooting and editing our music video, we uploaded our video to social networking site such as Facebook as well as uploading it onto Youtube. This expanded our variety of audiences. We also found that some people had embedded our video onto their blog sites as well as emailing it to one another, increasing our views as well as internet and audience awareness.

After editing our video in Final Cut Pro we used the programme Adobe After Effects to emphasise the club diegesis. Through altering the colour saturation levels, we were able to emphasis the ‘DVNO’ blue lighting as well as darken the black background which frames the performance element. The emphasis on the blue lighting allowed ‘DVNO’ to become more prevalent and silhouette the dancers, masking their identity and supporting the idea that they have been incorporated into the soul vision of the music.
